Complaining about the music 1934

It’s not just the supporters who make the noise. Over the years the club has put on its own musical entertainment too.

Here’s a comment on the music played by the band at the 5th round FA Cup tie against Portsmouth in 1934. It was a record attendance at the time of 29,700 and crowd barriers gave way at one point.

In view of the huge attendance perhaps it was as well there was no music at the Vetch Field of a kind which would have made the crowd sway, but I shared the wonder of many that it was a hymn -‘O God Our help in Ages Past’ – that was played after the Portsmouth goal has been scored.
Taken through and through the music was of a partciularly doleful nature having regard to the occasion, and the appeals that were made through the loud speakers must have been audible only to the people immediately near the instruments.
